Frequently Asked Questions
SPONSORSHIP
What am I committing to if I sign up for child sponsorship?
We request that for as long as you are able, you commit to sponsoring a child until they become independent – typically graduation from High School. We understand that unforeseen issues may arise meaning a sponsor may be unable to fulfill their commitment. In which case we ask that as much notice as possible be given before cancelling sponsorship, so a replacement sponsor can be found.
What do I do if I want to send a gift to my child?
We do not encourage mailing packages to Uganda, as shipping is very expensive and there is no guarantee items will arrive safely through customs.
Also, more size accurate and culturally appropriate gifts can be bought by the staff in Uganda.
If you would like your child to receive a gift you can send a check to the Hands of Love office with a list of the items you would like purchased for your child. To view a list of suggested gifts and their cost in Uganda, please click here on Gift List.
We will send your gift with the transfer we send to Hands of Love Uganda monthly. We will let the staff know who the gift is for and exactly what is to be purchased.
Once the gift is bought, it will be wrapped and given to your child. You will receive photos of your child receiving the gifts you purchased and typically a letter of thanks.
Cards and Letters may be mailed directly to the Uganda not to our office- addressed to:
Elijah Sebuchu
PO BOX 6809
Kampala,
Uganda
East Africa
(Please ensure your child's name is notated clearly on the inside of the envelope).
You may also email your child – please send your message to hand we will forward it to the staff in Uganda, who will ensure your child gets it.
How do I know the money I send is going where intended?
Every month the painstaking decision is made to spend money exactly as the donor intended, not necessarily according to the greatest need.
We are a grass roots organization. None of our USA staff are paid - such is their dedication to improving lives in Uganda. The staff in Uganda receive an average of $150 a month - if sponsored.
We are committed to ensuring that donor’s intent is honored and to providing feedback to the donor where possible of how money given was spent.
Why are there so many orphans in Uganda?
There are approximately 1.6 million orphans from AIDS in Uganda. Sadly whole families are being wiped out by the disease, leaving no extended family for orphans to be taken care of.
Even if the orphaned children do have living family members, the poverty in Uganda is so widespread that it is unlikely the relatives will have the means to feed more mouths. For this reason many children are left to fend for themselves and younger siblings in the bushes or on the streets.
What is the future for the children being cared for at Hands of Love orphanage and school?
Through education, love and spiritual nurture the children of Hands of Love are being given a bright future. As part of their education the children will be receiving computer and other vocational skills. The orphanage is in the outskirts of the city meaning that when the children graduate they will have the opportunity for further education and professional jobs.
With the quality of care and counsel being given the children of HOL – they are being raised up as future leaders of the next generation in Uganda.
